The Sub Genres

Psychological-
This sub genre usually involves a disturbed individual whose mental problems unnerve and terrify audiences. This sub genre is an escape from gore and violence that you expect to see in a slasher film.  E.g. the Exorcist, the Omen, the Others, the Unborn...


 
Slasher-
This sub genre usually involves a masked, psychopathic killer who kills a series of victims in a graphic and gruesome way. The use of knifes, chainsaws, guns, axes and other violent pieces of iconography are a key convention of these types of horror films. E.g. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Halloween, The last house on the left, Scream, Prom Night...


 
Supernatural-
The supernatural horror films feature ghosts and spirits at the centre of their narratives. Curses, miracles or strange goings on are usually found in this type of horror. Horrors featuring a supernatural presence can often be scarier than any other as you cannot escape the supernatural. E.g. The Final Destination Sequels, The Blair Witch Project, The Grudge Sequels, Paranormal Activity...


 
Gothic-These types of horrors are traditional in style and original. Wild landscapes, fog-shrouded towns and woodland, castles and mansions are main conventions of this type of sub genre. Ghosts, monsters, phantoms and demons are common within this sub genre. E.g. Frankenstein, Shutter Island, Dracula
